Why Choose a Career in HVAC or Plumbing?

Skilled labor jobs, such as heating, ventilation and air conditioning and plumbing, are going unfilled. Why? Older workers are retiring, and young people don’t have the hands-on classes like shop in high school anymore. Young people are also facing the expectation that you need to attend a college to be successful.

While the number of skilled trade workers is decreasing, the demand for HVAC and plumbing services is increasing faster than the average rate. The Department of Labor predicts that the economy will add an additional 100,000 jobs in plumbing and HVAC-related fields by 2026. If this skilled labor demand rate increases as predicted, wages may follow-suit and increase as well. The top 10% of HVAC workers already make more than $75,000 per year.

Whether you’re in high school, just joining the workforce, or looking for a career change, here are some things to consider.

  1. You’ll have job security with a skill set that is in high demand.
  2. There are no corporate hoops to jump through. You diagnose problems, offer solutions, and then fix it right then and there.
  3. You will meet new people and develop lasting relationship with other team members and clients. You may find that many clients request you for all of their service needs.
  4. Every day you are faced with a new challenge. You may have the knowledge to solve the problem, or you may have to reach out to a fellow team member to learn and grow. It’s not the same thing day-in and day-out, and boredom is not in the vocabulary.
  5. You can take your skills anywhere. Because there is a shortage of skilled trade positions throughout the country, you can relocate when you want to or when you need to.
  6. You’ll have a lot of independence. The team is there if you need help, but you are the face of the company to every client you meet. You are diagnosing the problem, advising the client, and making the fix.
  7. You can earn a competitive salary. If you are a top performer, you can double an average HVAC or plumbing take-home pay. Your earning potential is only limited by you.
  8. You can avoid the time and expense of a four-year degree program, not be weighed down by debt in the tens of thousands of dollars and higher range, and earn money in your career while others are still in college.
